A soft breeze fluttered through the crowded undergrowth that lined the shore. The air felt slightly humid, and Freja could taste the salt from the sea with every breath. Seagulls cawed in the distance, probably fighting one another over a dead fish carcass that washed up on shore. Freja padded towards the beach, the soft, white sand flying up in the air as she moved. She loved going to the beach, as it always brought a feeling of peace to her mind. The way the waves crashed on the shore lulled her into a state of being that brought her intense calmness and peace. She couldn't find that anywhere else, and made it a rule that she always had to visit the beach every so often.
Freja stood at the shoreline, watching the waves lap at the shore. Her paws sunk into the wet sand, and she loved the feeling of the cool water soak her paws as it made its way onto the sandy beach. A couple seagulls flew overhead, and the sky was pale white from the overcast. The sun hid behind a mountain of clouds, casting only a dim light onto the floor below. Freja closed her eyes and imagined herself swimming in the depths of the ocean, playing with the colorful fish that swam there. She imagined that she didn't need to go up for air, and that she could spend as much time as she wanted playing with the fish. The small female caught herself smiling at the thought, and only wished that she could make it come true. Feeling a burst of energy, Freja leaped into the air and landed with a large splash in the water. Barking with intense joy, the young female splashed around in the shallow water. She waded farther into the water until it was grazing her belly. She knew that she couldn't go much farther, as she wasn't a very good swimmer. Her paws gripped the sand as best as they could, and inched forward. Suddenly, a wave crashed into her, knocking her off of her paws. Freja found herself underwater, the abhorrent taste of salty water in her mouth. She squeezed her eyes shut, and frantically flailed her legs about in hopes of swimming up the surface. But the way the wave had knocked her, she had no idea where the surface was. Her sense of placement was completely off, and she had no idea if she was swimming farther down or up. She was running out of breath, and she prayed that she wouldn't drown. Was anybody nearby? She hoped that if someone was near, they would come to her rescue.
Freja pawed at the water and finally broke the surface. She could hardly keep her head above water, and saw that she was far from the shore. The waves must have carried her farther out to sea. "He-help!" Someone he-," she tried to yell, but the water crashed into her mouth before she could finish. She tried so hard to keep her head above water, but the crashing waves won. She found herself, once again, below the surface, frantically waving her legs around. This certainly couldn't be the way to die, right? She was so young. Freja tried hard to reach the surface again, and she wondered how long this would have to go on.
