Each step taken by the femme was as quiet as she could make it. Her breath came slowly, deliberately. Her eyes were locked on a mouse. The small critter had wandered out into the open; a grave mistake. Wren kept low to the ground, ears twitching at even the slightest sound. She took a cautious step forward, pausing halfway when the rodent lifted its head. Smart eyes darted all around, nearly focusing intently on Vat herself, before they passed right over her. The femme’s coat blended in very well to her surroundings. After a few moments, the mouse went back to foraging the ground.
Wren continued her silent approach at an agonizingly slow pace. Dangerous, now that other predators could be lurking around, but necessary.
Only once more did the mouse look up in alarm. She didn’t give the meal another chance as she sprang from her hiding place. The little rodent let out a screeching cry before taking off as fast as its legs could carry it. Wren was faster, however, and was quick to take down the little morsel. Its screams caused some other rodents to dart into their holes. But she didn’t care about anything else. Finally, finally she’d managed to make a successful kill.
A sharp sound rang out, causing her to freeze, ears darting in all directions. What was that..? She immediately lowered herself down, backing away as quietly as she could. The femme was able to get under the cover of a nearby log just as a feral cat emerged before her from behind a rock. The cat had yet to notice her, but it was sniffing the air, clearly catching her scent. Or that of her meal. Its beady eyes locked onto hers, the creature hissing defensively, the fur along its spine rising. Wren emerged from her own hiding place with a warning growl, daring the feline to come any closer.
It took the challenge head on.
The Tabby cat lunged forward, snapping at the canine feet. The femme dropped her kill in surprise, returning the attack the cat had launched at her. It dodged her attempt, snatching the mouse up in its tiny jaws, before darting back the way it had come. With a snarl of pure rage, Vat chased after the annoying scavenger. As she crashed through the wooden door, she found herself tangled with a second cat. She let out a yelp of pain as the creature’s sharp teeth locked on her paw. She tried to grab hold of the cat to kill it, but it quickly released her, grabbing hold of her face instead. Another yelp ripped from her throat, and she swatted the feline, causing it to merely grunt and tug harder on her cheek. How could it be she was losing to a cat? She was the bigger of the two! Yet she was losing this battle.
Swallowing her pride, Wren let out a long howl. Surely someone would come rescue her from this pitiful fight. As if to shut her up, the first cat, a Calico, returned to aid the second, latching onto her leg. Vat snarled fiercely, attempting to shake either creature off of her. It was very unusual to find more than one cat in proximity to one another, but Wren must have stumbled upon a mating pair, possibly close to their den. Still. To be taken out by a couple of cats was beyond embarrassing. She only hoped someone would come to her rescue, and wouldn’t tear her a new one for losing a kill to a pair of scavengers.
